Half-and-half cycle lane

This map of the proposed Rathmines section of the Tallaght Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) shows a 1.5 metre cycle lane within a 3.0 metre traffic lane. Is there any point to this design? If cars and bikes are to share the same roadspace on this section, why bother painting a cycle lane?

The point of this design is to restrict roadspace for cyclists to only the cycle lane. What will result from this is that motorists will feel justified in becoming agressive if a cyclist strays outside this lane. At the same time the cyclists won’t gain what little advantage there might be from a restricted bike only cycle lane. This sort of cycle lane will make things significantly worse for the cyclists using it.

That’s certainly what the effect of this design will be. What I’m trying to figure out is what the justification might be, i.e. what reasons will be rolled out to justify persisting with this design in the face of objections.

There’s a mad cycle lane in Santry in between two traffic lanes. On Mobi road Glasnevin they put the cycle lane on the footpath but the footpath is now too narrow. It kind of reminds me of one of those things where you paint a door on a wall and then open it magically i.e. wishful thinking.
